Share It is a traditional doctrine of Christian spirituality that a constituent part of repentance, of turning away from sin and back to God, includes some form of penance, without which the Christian is unlikely to remain on the narrow path and be saved Jer. Christ Himself said that His disciples would fast once He had departed Lk. The general law of penance, therefore, is part of the law of God for man. The Church for her part has specified certain forms of penance, both to ensure that the Catholic will do something, as required by divine law, while making it easy for Catholics to fulfill the obligation. All Fridays through the year and the time of Lent are penitential days and times throughout the entire Church. Abstinence from eating meat or another food according to the prescriptions of the conference of bishops is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year unless they are solemnities; abstinence and fast are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on the Friday of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. All persons who have completed their fourteenth year are bound by the law of abstinence; all adults are bound by the law of fast up to the beginning of their sixtieth year. Nevertheless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance. It is for the conference of bishops to determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence and to substitute in whole or in part for fast and abstinence other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety. The Church, therefore, has two forms of official penitential practices – three if the Eucharistic fast of one hour before Communion is included.

Full, complete, genital sexual activity is reserved for those in the sacramental covenant of marriage. Love is not a reality that is measured and molded by rigid rules. That transformation begins when we are conceived and is marked by our Baptism. Any and everything we choose to do should be in tune with that transformation of our hearts and minds and souls. The challenge for those who are not married is to find appropriate and just ways of expressing what their relationship means.

Hi, guys — I don’t know if these are really questions about apologetics, yet they are about marriage and what the Church teaches. Is it morally wrong for someone to date a man who has not had an annulment? Is he still married, and is he committing adultery in some sense, even if not being sexual. Is it morally wrong for a woman to date such a man? Could a woman in such a relationship also be accountable because she may be leading the man into sin?
If I am in the presence of such people, is it my obligation to speak up about the matter? I would appreciate some kind of answer, or maybe you can lead me to someone from whom I can get the information I am seeking. God Bless You All! Thanks for e-mailing us. Actually I’d make a distinction.

The Eucharist in the Catholic Church is celebrated as “the source and summit” of the Christian life. The Eucharist is consecrated daily (except on Good Friday, when consecration takes place on Maundy Thursday, but is distributed during the Mass of the Presanctified) during the celebration of Mass, the eucharistic term Eucharist is also used for the bread and wine when.

Moreover, and uniquely, in the one prayer given to posterity by Jesus, the Lord’s Prayer , the word epiousios —which does not exist elsewhere in Classical Greek literature—has been linguistically parsed to mean “super-substantial” bread , and interpreted by the Vatican as a reference to the Bread of Life , the Eucharist.

This is a question we have often been asked during our years of pleasant association with young people. Here we merely give a concise summary on the subject of kissing; later we shall elaborate on the subject. We distinguish between kissing and kissing. Rather, let us say that there are four categories of kisses: Kisses that are merely a sacred and lovely symbol used to express deep and beautiful emotion and are not, of course, sinful; the mutual kisses of mother and child; the mutual kisses of husband and wife; the kisses imprinted on a sacred object, such as the Bible, the crucifix, the ring of a bishop, the relic of a saint, the altar, the hand of a priest, etc.
In such kisses real affection is felt but there is normally no exciting of the passions. A kiss of this type is not sinful at all, even if it be exchanged between a young lady and her gentleman friend. The engaged, in order to foster their mutual love, may make use of the non-passionate kiss and embrace; but they must remember that continual hugging and kissing, even of the non-passionate type, may readily bring on serious temptations, and so should be avoided.
Kissing for the thrill of it, because of the excitement non-venereal produced by “an increase of pulse and respiration which causes a feeling of exhilaration” is not in itself sinful, if there is no reaction of the organs of generation; but such kisses, in certain circumstances, easily prove a source of danger because they prepare the way for arousing the passions. Kissing in a spirit of mischievousness, a stolen kiss, for instance, or forcing a kiss on a girl who resists, or kissing just because of the novelty of the act, is hardly a sin against the sixth commandment, but may offend against the virtue of charity.
Passionate kissing, just because intense or passionate, stirs up venereal pleasure and is forbidden under pain of serious sin. Kisses not at first passionate, ordinarily become so if prolonged for some time, so that really prolonged kissing is classified as passionate. In short, all kissing to arouse venereal pleasure is gravely sinful because of the intention.

Share Dear Grace, My daughter is at an age where she wants to start dating. I want to give her advice on how she should behave as a good Christian, but I’d like some help, because I do not want to “turn her off” by sounding too strict or demanding. What kinds of things should I tell her? I can well imagine how protective you must be feeling right now. The young woman whom you probably still consider in many ways to be your “little girl” is about to embark on a new part of her life’s journey.
It is often especially difficult to let go of a daughter, I think, because in many ways they seem so much more vulnerable than boys.

Among Eastern Catholic Churches , which permit married priests, bishops must be widowers or unmarried, or agree to abstain from sexual contact with their wives. It is a common misconception that all such bishops come from religious orders. While this is generally true, it is not an absolute rule. Catholic bishops are usually leaders of territorial units called dioceses.
Normally, bishops administer the sacrament of holy orders. In Latin-rite Catholic churches, only bishops and priests with authorization by the local bishop may licitly administer the sacrament of confirmation, but if an ordinary priest administers that sacrament illicitly, it is nonetheless considered valid, so that the person confirmed cannot be actually confirmed again, by a bishop or otherwise. Latin rite priests with special permission of the diocesan bishop or the Holy See can lawfully administer confirmation; every Catholic priest must administer confirmation, even without permission, to children in danger of death.
In Eastern Catholic Churches , confirmation is done by parish priests via the rite of chrismation , and is usually administered to both babies and adults immediately after their baptism. The liturgy of ordination recalls the Old Testament priesthood and the priesthood of Christ. In the words of Thomas Aquinas , “Christ is the source of all priesthood:
