Archaeologists have discovered bone needles with eyes, used to sew together skins and furs, dating back to this time. The earliest known sewing needles made of iron come from the Celtic hill fort at Manching, Germany, and date to the third century BC. The tomb of a minor official of the Han Dynasty BC-AD has been reported by Chinese archaeologists as containing a sewing set complete with thimble.
This would be the oldest known example of a thimble, which originated as a device to help push crude needles through resistant materials such as animal skins. It was over years later in , that the first workable sewing machine was invented and patented by the British inventor Thomas Saint. Earlier, in , Karl Weisenthal, a German inventor, devised the first sewing macine needle, but did not produce a complete machine.
sewing machines Rudolf’s obsession with vintage sewing machines started over twenty years ago, when he found an antique hand cranked model in a local second-hand store. As it turned out, its most essential part, the bobbin case, was missing.
The big issue is that these machines were made to use the x13 needle. While it is available mail order there are only sizes 12 and 14 available. The x13 needle has the same timing length as the popular 15×1 but is slightly shorter overall. Careful examination and testing showed my machine was running a 15×1 needle when I bought it and that it works properly in all respects. This includes sewing full width pattern stitches on an 8 layer stack of 10 canvas.

When sewing well the 66 will out-sew nearly any modern machine through a huge variety of fabrics from linen to lace, horse blankets to buckram. It is simply near perfect engineering but this came at a price. A Singer 66 was one of the most expensive sewing machines on the market costing several months wages. Doesn’t sound much until you find that many people were earning less that a pound a week.
Suddenly the machine cost nearly two months wages, in today’s terms, a fortune. Expensive but simply the best on the market at the time.

See Article History Inventor, a person who brings ideas or objects together in a novel way to create an invention , something that did not exist before. Inventors defy definition; as a result, they are frequently defined by what they are not. For example, though there is a close relation between invention and science and engineering , an inventor is not necessarily a scientist or an engineer. A scientist is said to be a discoverer—that is, somebody who by acute observation and brilliant analysis is able to find and explain something that already exists in nature.
An engineer, meanwhile, uses existing technology and scientific understanding to design better objects or processes. But an inventor, it is said, creates something that had never previously existed.

Model 12K The New Family was later renamed the Singer Model 12 12K in the UK and remained in production for almost 40 years, until just past the turn of the 20th century.
The characteristic shape of the bed on the early models resulted in them being referred to as Singer fiddle base machines. The New Family was the first high volume mass produced sewing machine. Despite its high cost, its attractive and reliable design meant that it sold in huge volumes and established Singer as the market leading sewing machine manufacturer for next century.
As soon as the original patents expired, the New Family design was widely copied by other manufacturers. The New Family Model 12 machines had a transverse boat shaped shuttle and used round shank straight needles which were designated as Class 12×1. Model 12K – Underbed Over their long production run there were several minor modifications made to the machine.
The most significant of which was the transfer of the tension adjuster screw from the front of the faceplate to the top. Earlier examples utilised a pivotting lever for disengaging the drive to the machine, whilst later ones had a stop motion button which had to be pulled and twisted to disengage the drive dog from the main shaft. During its evolution the bed shape was changed from the fiddle base design to the more modern rectangular shape.

The company name of Husqvarna comes from the position of the factory alongside the impressive Husqvarna falls where great salmon leap upstream in the spring floods. The Husqvarna Sewing Machine Company can rightly claim to be one of the oldest companies in the world still supplying sewing machines. Because Husqvarna originally was the arms factory to the Swedish Royal Family and was in business centuries before it started making sewing machines.
Early Husqvarna history is sketchy at best and I have travelled the length of Sweden looking for details. I’ll explain the different spellings in a mo. During the ‘s there was a fortress called Rumlaborg near Husqvarna. Records show that by the name Husqvarna was already in use to describe the Mill House hus-house beside the waterfalls known then as Husquernen.
